What Are Freckles?

Freckles are small, brown spots on your skin. They usually occur on the face, neck and shoulders. Freckles are often quite noticeable and can be embarrassing to people who are self-conscious about their appearance.

Freckles form as a result of the overproduction of melanin, which is is the cell that is responsible to produce color for skin and hair. Freckles come from ultraviolet (UV) radiation stimulation.

How Do Freckles Look?

There are 2 types of freckles, ephelides, and solar lentigines.

Ephelides are the common brown spots that people perceive as freckles. They form as a consequence of sun exposure. Ephelides can appear on the face, neck, décolleté and back of the hands.

Solar lentigines tend to accumulate in more mature individuals. Solar lentigines includes common brown spots known as ageing spots and sunspots. Solar lentigines appear in patches, rather than like speckles as commonly known for ephelides. Solar lentigines appear due to persistent UV ray exposure or sun exposure and also due to hormone changes. Solar lentigines tend to appear during or after pregnancy and hormone changes such as use of oral birth control prescription.

Pictures below show the examples of ephelides and solar lentigines.
